India’s Rail Revival: 1,000 New Trains, Bullet Project Powering Ahead

Date:

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has unveiled a bold five-year roadmap for Indian Railways, targeting the launch of 1,000 new trains to boost capacity, reduce costs and enhance the passenger experience. This expansion complements a massive modernization push that includes record-breaking infrastructure growth: over 35,000 km of track added in 11 years including 5,300 km in just the past year, surpassing the size of Germany’s rail network.

Manufacturing is also scaling up, with India now producing 30,000 wagons and 1,500 locomotives annually, outpacing North American and European combined output. Investment into the sector has skyrocketed, soaring from ₹25,000 crore to ₹2.52 lakh crore, with an additional ₹20,000 crore via public–private partnerships.

On the high-speed rail front, the Mumbai‑Ahmedabad bullet train remains on track, with a prototype expected in 2026 and commercial launches slated for 2027. Technical collaborations with Japan and R&D support from IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee are helping bring the project to fruition.

As freight share rises, driven by lower costs and eco‑friendliness, the Railways aims for a transformative leap, offering world‑class services domestically and globally.
