How Smart Cities Are Driving India’s Transport Revolution

Date:

India’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) market is poised for a dramatic surge, projected to soar from around US $1.47 billion in 2024 to US $3.26 billion by 2033, a robust CAGR of approximately 9.9% . This growth is fueled by rapid urbanization, heavy government investment under initiatives like the Smart Cities Mission and rising adoption of IoT-driven traffic and fleet management systems.

Hardware remains the dominant segment over 60% of market share, comprising sensors, surveillance cameras, signal systems and telecommunication devices. Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) lead system types, managing urban congestion and highway safety. North and West India are spearheading deployment, with cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad aggressively rolling out ITS solutions.

The outlook is overwhelmingly positive: IoT vehicle tracking is expanding into hundreds of thousands of buses and commercial fleets; AI‑enabled traffic control is gaining ground; public-sector backing ensures long‑term project pipelines. With private and public stakeholders collaborating, India’s ITS sector is set for explosive growth by 2033.
