The Bombay High Court’s recent direction for a fresh Development Plan (DP) in the Lonavala-Khandala region is a timely and much-needed move. As an expert in urban development, I believe this decision will help balance nature and construction. Lonavala and Khandala are famous for their greenery and tourism, but in recent years, rapid construction has hurt the area’s beauty and caused strain on roads, water and other basic services.
A new DP will help put proper rules in place, making sure that future development is done in a planned and responsible way. It is important to protect the hills, forests and water bodies while allowing growth that supports the local economy. The court’s direction also highlights the need to check illegal buildings and poor planning, which have caused safety and traffic issues.
In my view, this step by the court should act as a wake-up call for other tourist zones in Maharashtra. Development must be people-friendly and eco-friendly. Lonavala-Khandala’s future depends on smart planning that keeps both nature and progress in mind. If implemented correctly, this plan could become a model for other hill stations across India.
