Coal India Limited (CIL) has partnered with Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) for a major construction project to expand the Chandrapura Thermal Power Station in Jharkhand. The ₹21,000 crore project aims to strengthen India’s power infrastructure and meet the country’s growing energy demand.
The project involves the construction of two ultra-supercritical power units, each with a capacity of 800 MW, adding a total of 1,600 MW to DVC’s existing plant. Both CIL and DVC will invest on a 50:50 equity basis, with the project expected to be completed and operational by 2031–32.
Coal for the new units will be supplied by CIL’s subsidiary, Central Coalfields Limited, ensuring a reliable and cost-effective fuel source. The strategic location near coalfields will further reduce transportation costs and make the project more efficient.
This construction initiative highlights India’s focus on expanding its base-load power generation capacity through advanced, environmentally efficient technology. Once completed, the project will play a key role in supporting regional development, industrial growth, and India’s long-term energy security while maintaining competitive power generation costs.
