Authorities in Bengaluru have issued strict instructions to immediately clear construction materials dumped on footpaths in Jayanagar, following a rise in public complaints about obstructed pedestrian pathways and safety hazards. The directive comes as residents repeatedly reported that stacks of sand, cement bags, debris and building supplies were occupying sidewalks, forcing pedestrians — including seniors, schoolchildren and cyclists — to walk on the main roads.
Local officials have now been asked to conduct spot inspections, identify violators, and remove materials that hinder pedestrian movement. The BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) has emphasized that footpaths are public spaces meant exclusively for walking, and any encroachment will result in penalties. Contractors and property owners have also been warned that repeated offences could lead to hefty fines and stoppage of construction activity.
Residents of Jayanagar, one of the city’s oldest and most well-planned neighbourhoods, say the problem has worsened with the recent boom in renovation and redevelopment projects. Many contractors allegedly dump materials on footpaths for convenience, disregarding public safety. This has led to several near-miss incidents involving schoolchildren and senior citizens navigating busy roads during peak hours.
BBMP officials noted that efforts are underway to introduce stricter monitoring systems, including ward-level enforcement teams and night patrols to prevent illegal dumping. They are also exploring the use of CCTV footage and public complaint apps to identify offenders more quickly.
Civic activists have welcomed the move, saying it is long overdue. They maintain that clearing the footpaths will not only improve walkability but also enhance road safety and reduce congestion — especially in high-traffic areas of Jayanagar.
With enforcement measures now tightened, authorities hope to restore unobstructed pedestrian pathways and set a citywide precedent against misuse of public spaces.
