Indian Railways Hits a Global Milestone!

India’s railway network is moving into a new era. With 99.6 per cent of its broad gauge network electrified, Indian Railways stands among the world’s most electrified major railway systems, second only to Switzerland. This achievement reflects planning, steady effort and a clear vision.

Railways are more than a way to travel. They connect towns, support businesses, carry goods and bring people closer. Electrification makes this network cleaner and more energy-efficient. It shows how development and care for the environment can move forward together.

The pace of work is notable. Between 2014 and 2026, India electrified 48,072 route kilometres. This is a major step in a programme that has transformed railway operations. Electric trains can carry heavier loads and support faster services. They also reduce diesel use, helping the country save fuel and lower pollution.

Indian Railways is adding clean energy to its progress. By June 2026, it had commissioned more than 1,260 MW of renewable energy capacity from solar and wind power. This points towards a future where transport can depend more on cleaner energy sources.

The achievement is not simply a global ranking. It is a sign of India’s ability to build large public systems with purpose and determination. Completing the remaining electrification work and expanding renewable power will strengthen this progress.

A modern railway is a foundation for a stronger nation. India’s electrified tracks are carrying not only trains, but also the promise of a cleaner, more connected future.
